Before becoming a music teacher, I was a musician in many school settings. I have to tell you, my first experiences leading sectionals were rough. No plans, no strategies, and no idea what to do. Over my career, I've noticed some glaring issues in the way music programs facilitate student-led rehearsals. Honestly, it's not your director's fault. Many try to implement leadership programs, but adding a meaningful curriculum to their already-full plates is a big ask.
I have been honored to serve as a section leader in 6 different ensembles (3 choral and 3 instrumental) at the high school, college, and semi-professional levels.
I am also a student of leadership. I spent much of my coursework during my Master's degree diving more into the theories and practices that can enhance our lives as section leaders.
